Base Camp Trek Grading System

We classify our training days by a number, a letter and a + symbol.

The number indicates the average number of hours the length of the walk should take, these range from 1 to 9.

The letter indicates the steepness, exposure and technical difficulty of the terrain.

A) An easy graded walking path
B) Flat off track walking (ie. a creek bed)
C) A steep track
D) A very steep difficult track
E) Being completely off track and steep

The addition symbol + indicates that the walk will involve some rock scrambling where it will be necessary to use your hands.

Example:

4C+ = 4 hour walk on a steep track with some scrambling (e.g. Flinders peak)

1A = A very short, easy walk up a clear track with no climbing (e.g. Mt Ngungun)

9D+ = A long day in the hills, up a steep and difficult track with scrambling involved (e.g. Mt Barney Peasants Ridge)
